British Naturalisation UK

Most candidates must meet the basic requirements to apply for British citizenship through naturalisation. The applicant must:

• Be over the age of 18 years old
• Currently be living in the UK
• Meet the English language requirements and pass the Life in the UK test (unless exemptions apply)
• Be of “good character” i.e. not committed immigration fraud or any serious crimes

Most applicants must also have:

• Resided in the UK for at least five years, without a total absence of more than 450 days
• Not been absent from the UK for more than 90 days in the last 12 months
• Been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK for at least one year, or in the case of EEA nationals UK permanent residence

There are different requirements for spouses or civil partners. If you are under the age of 18 years old and do not hold British Citizenship by birth, you may have the option to register as a British citizen instead.

Before completing your form, you may need to complete the Life in the UK test or an English Language test (IELTS) as well as gathering details of all travel outside of the UK within the last five years. A Naturalisation application needs to be completed in paper form and sent by post, therefore, it is advised to make a copy of your form. As the form is quite lengthy we recommend you seek advice and read through the guidance notes. 

Evidence needs to be submitted to prove you meet all the eligibility requirements. Once submitted, the Home Office will complete all the necessary checks as well as looking into your criminal record. If successful, you will be invited to a Citizenship ceremony during which you will be given your Certificate of Naturalisation which you will need to apply for a British passport.
